The Valley Line in Edmonton, Canada is a light-rail line being built in two phases: phase 1 is the Valley Line Southeast section between Mill Woods and 102 Street in the downtown area; phase 2 will run from downtown Edmonton to Lewis Farms.
Phase 1 is set to open for passenger services in 2021. Ground-breaking for the line took place on 22 April 2016. The original opening for this phase was December 2020 but construction is running behind schedule in part due to adverse weather conditions in 2019.
The Valley Line Southeast will have a length of 13.1km and have 12 stations. At Churchill station, the station preceding 102 Street, the Valley Line will have connections with the Metro Line and the Capital Line. All of the stations bar Davies station will be at ground level – Davies station will be elevated.
The Valley Line will have its own maintenance facility, which will be located in the Wagner area along the Southeast route, which is why this section of the line is being constructed first.
As of Q3 of 2020 the construction was 81.4 percent complete.
The low-floor rolling stock – 26 FLEXITY Freedom LRVs – for this line is being manufactured by Bombardier. They are being delivered to Edmonton from Kingston, Ontario by rail on flat-bed wagons. There are eight plants in total involved in manufacturing the rolling stock. The final assembly is taking place in Kingston, along with the dynamic testing. The FLEXITY freedom trains will have a top speed of 80km/h.
