Automated Inspection of Rail Vehicles

Duos Technologies, Inc., provides cutting-edge solutions that automate the mechanical and security inspection of fast-moving trains, trucks and automobiles through a broad range of proprietary hardware, software, information technology and artificial intelligence.

Safety is the #1 concern of the rail-road industry. The average railcar contains hundreds of parts and components. Every component is critical and must be inspected frequently and thoroughly to ensure safe and reliable operations. With more than 1.6 million railcars running on nearly 200 thousand miles of track in North America, every railroad and railcar owner is seeking advanced technologies to keep their operations safe, reliable, and efficient. Improving processes in this area is key to improving operating ratios.

Railcar Imaging Systems

Duos Technologies Railcar Inspection Portal (RIP®) is an advanced, AI-enabled railcar imaging system that produces high-resolution images of railcars moving at track speeds. The wide array of crisply detailed images offers a full, 360 “all around” view of each railcar — not just the top and sides, but the undercarriage as well. An intuitive, streamlined user interface allows mechanical railcar inspectors to scan trains, review railcars, and perform detailed, thorough inspections quickly and easily.

The RIP’s optional Artificial Intelligence detection help to elevate inspections to a highly automated process. Professionally developed AI models are available to automatically target and identify a wide variety of specific railcar defects and anomalies, providing inspectors with alerts and notifications in advance. This greatly reduces the inspection time by immediately drawing attention to areas containing automatically detected defects.

Beyond simple imaging, the RIP® is a comprehensive inspection solution with a proven record of success in streamlining railcar inspection operations.

Features / Benefits

  • Increase safety – employees, the general public & customers
  • Reduce cost of risk – liability, repair & replacement costs
  • Decrease dwell times and improve equipment turns
  • Improve overall fleet health by proactively managing car repair process
  • Accelerate customer communications and regulatory compliance

The RIP can also include additional components including an Automated Pantograph Inspection System (apis®) to provide safe inspection of electrified vehicles and a Vehicle Undercarriage Examiner (vue®) to visualize under the railcar for inspection and intrusion. Machine learning algorithms (A.I.) can also be incorporated to provide an even higher level of maintenance inspection.

Vehicle Undercarriage Examiner

Maximize Visual Information to Detect and Secure

The Oblique Vehicle Undercarriage Examiner (obliquevue®) is an arrangement of 4 high-resolution area scan cameras configured and arranged at specific angles of pitch and yaw to provide images at an oblique angle to the train direction of travel. The obliquevue® system is most commonly deployed in pairs with 2 chassis and a total of 8 high-resolution area scan cameras facing each other to fully capture the leading and trailing surfaces of transiting equipment. Each high-resolution area scan camera is illuminated by a Duos custom-designed and fabricated ring light of 6 high-power LEDs.
