CENELEC SIL2 Certified Train Detection Solutions for Level Crossings
The first fully installed LCWS with no interruptions to rail operations or engineering for track access or maintenance. Approved by Network Rail.
Wavetrain Systems AS
Wavetrain Systems AS was founded in August 2009 after significant research and development by NORSAR, a world leading research foundation specializing in software solutions and research activities within applied seismology.
Wavetrain offers its technology to railway infrastructure owners and rail operators, enabling train detection through its product the Level Crossing Warning System (“LCWS”).
By using acoustic sensors attached to the rail head, the LCWS interprets acoustic signals generated by approaching trains to warn passers at level crossings.
The train detection system interfaces with customer required warning measures.
Approved by Network Rail
The LCWS is type approved for single and double-track level crossings in the UK. The LCWS is installed in a day by two installers without service interruption. No lengthy cabling to strike-in points needed as is common with conventional level crossing systems. This secures shorter installation and commissioning times and reduced life-cycle cost compared to its conventional competitors.
The LCWS is autonomous, and independent of the signaling infrastructure. The system retains required data for potential unwanted events at the crossing and has an accepted communication through mobile networks for maintenance messages.
Unprotected Level Crossings
The market estimates that more than 50% of level crossings are passive and unprotected. Only signage tells the potential passer to protect themselves. The market is huge and the LCWS is positioned to fill the gap where conventional systems are too expensive or include too much service interruption to be feasible.
SIL 2 and ISO Certification
Complying with the requirements of the railway industry includes adherence to several international and national standards and processes. The company and its product processes are European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (“CENELEC”) SIL2, IEC and ISO certified. Recent national type approval in the UK crowns the effort to open the market for the company and product.
Wavetrain achieved its first CENELEC SIL2 certification in 2015. Improvements and updates have been re-certified to retain the required certifications.
Wavetrain Systems AS Design Standards and Certifications
Wavetrain and Network Rail have a prosperous and long-term collaboration to secure unprotected level crossings. Design for Reliability (DfR), environmental standards, user requirements and regulatory needs are being met through the listed certifications:
- CENELEC SIL2 certified since 2015
- ISO 9001 certified since 2015 – Quality Management accreditation
- ISO 14001 certified since 2017 – Environmental Management accreditation
- ISO 45001 certified since 2020 – Occupational Health and Safety Management accreditation
- ISO 27001 certified since 2021 – Information Security Management accreditation
The Wavetrain train detection system is the first CENELEC SIL2 system on the market. Its benefits compared to conventional systems make it a competitive option for the railway industry to protect level crossings that are not yet secured.
