Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx have released a request for qualifications (RfQ) for the Advance Tunnel Contract package for the Yonge North Subway Extension (YNSE).
This project will extend the Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) Line 1 subway by approximately eight kilometres from the existing terminus at Finch Station into Richmond Hill.

The extension will run through Toronto and York Region, including sections within Markham, Richmond Hill and Vaughan.
It will include a 6.3-kilometre tunnelled segment, as well as an above-ground section that will run alongside the existing CN rail corridor on the route’s northern section.
The RfQ outlines the scope of work to design, build and finance the tunnels for the extension. This includes:
- Approximately 6.3 kilometres of tunnelling works
- The design and construction of launch and extraction shafts, tunnels and headwalls for stations and support of excavation for emergency exit buildings
- The design, procurement and supply of tunnel boring machines and tunnel liner segments
- Reinforcing and improving soil to facilitate tunnelling under and next to the CN Railway tracks and the York Durham Sewage System
- Construction of CN right-of-way separation barriers to expedite safe corridor access and construction
The Yonge North Subway Extension is one of several priority transit projects planned for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, including the Ontario Line, the Scarborough Subway Extension, the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension and the Hamilton LRT.
