Spain: Thales Begins Valladolid Eastern Bypass Signalling Project

Thales has begun drafting the construction project for the installation of signalling and telecommunications on the 17.5km Eastern Bypass in Valladolid, Spain, following the award of the contract by Adif in January.

The project has received funds of more than 17.8 million EUR from the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

The 17.5km Eastern Bypass includes a viaduct measuring 1,130m and a 2,192m tunnel in order to avoid crossing built-up areas. Once operational, the line speed of the bypass will be 160km/h.

As part of the project, Thales will provide its signalling equipment – its L905E electronic interlocking, its TTC audio-frequency track circuits, LED signals and its electro-hydraulic switch actuators. These installations will allow for the operation of automatic blocking and the ASFA digital train protection system. The Thales signalling system will be remotely operated from the centralised traffic control at the Miranda Command Post.

The new bypass will allow access to the new Valladolid railway complex and will provide double-track continuity for freight traffic on the Madrid-Hendaye line. Once operational, the Eastern Bypass will accommodate the passage of all freight trains, which represent 25 percent of the current rail traffic at Valladolid-Campo Grande station.
