Spain: Málaga Metro Extended to City Centre

Metro de Málaga has inaugurated its extension of the Málaga Metro to connect the network with the city centre.

The 1.7-kilometre extension connects the most populated areas of Málaga with the historic centre and serves two new stations: Guadalmedina and Atarazanas.

It is anticipated that this new section will double user demand for the metro from around 7 million passengers to 14 million passengers each year.

Metro de Málaga currently has two lines, stretching a total length of 13 kilometres and serving 19 stations.

Since its inauguration in 2014, the network has been equipped with Alstom’s CBTC Urbalis 400 signalling technology.

Alstom has now also installed this solution on the new section of the network, enabling the location of trains to be shared in real-time to improve the reliability and capacity of the metro.
