Renfe is exercising an option to order an additional 32 medium-distance electric trains from CAF.
This option is part of a contract awarded to CAF at the end of 2022 for the initial supply of 28 electric trains along with the provision of their relevant parts and maintenance services for 15 years.
This agreement includes the option for CAF to supply up to 42 additional trains, which Renfe has now partly exercised.
Of the additional 32 electric trains ordered, 24 will be 3-car models and the other 8 trains will be 4-car models.
This extension is worth approximately 190 million EUR and is part of Renfe’s ongoing Fleet Renewal Plan.
The trains will operate at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and will be equipped with batteries to run short distances on sections of the network with no catenary or when required when a power cut occurs.
This order further strengthens CAF’s relationship with Renfe. Most recently, the Spanish operator also contracted CAF to supply 29 commuter trains.
The new agreement now brings the value of CAF’s projects with Renfe over the last three years to a total of more than 1 billion EUR.
