Spain: Renfe to Order 101 Cercanías and Media Distancia Trains

Renfe has announced that it will execute the purchase option for 101 additional Cercanías and Media Distancia trains before the end of this year.

69 of these units will be high-capacity Cercanías trains manufactured by Stadler and Alstom, while 32 will be Media Distancia trains manufactured by CAF.

This investment is part of the Spanish operator’s fleet renewal plan which will deliver more modern, efficient and sustainable vehicles.

With the forthcoming acquisition, Renfe’s fleet renewal plan will exceed 5.4 billion EUR in spending for 519 new high-speed, commuter, medium-distance and metric gauge trains, as well as high-speed and freight locomotives.

In addition to improving reliability, the new trains will provide greater efficiency to help overcome the challenge of rising electricity prices.

Renfe has already begun talks with the manufacturers to finalise the purchase of these additional trains, and contracts are expected to be signed in the coming weeks.

This is a result of the government’s authorisation to increase the debt limit for this year by 879.3 million EUR in order to help strengthen public transport.
