Tunnelling Begins on Sydney Metro West Line

Sydney Metro has launched the first two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to carve out a section of the 24-kilometre Sydney Metro West line.

TBM Daphne and TBM Beatrice have started their 11-kilometre journeys to create twin tunnels from The Bays to Sydney Olympic Park.

Construction of these twin metro tunnels is part of the Central Tunnelling Package awarded in July 2021 to the Acciona Ferrovial Joint Venture.

Along with the excavation of the tunnels, work on this phase of the Sydney Metro West project will include the construction of cross passages and crossover caverns.

Once passenger services commence in 2030, Sydney Metro West will double the rail capacity between Sydney’s two largest central business districts.
