ABB has been awarded a 150 million AUD contract to power trains for Australia’s Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP).
In addition, the company is investing around 6 million AUD in a local Traction Center of Excellence in regional Queensland. This site, located in Fraser Coast, will feature a traction converter, traction motor and traction battery assembly and service centre.
Under this contract, ABB will supply the complete traction packages for 65 new six-car passenger trains, which are set to be operational for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The company will also provide engineering and service support for each of the units.
The contract was awarded by Rotem Company (Korea), which is a joint venture partner with Downer EDI Rail Pty Ltd.
Downer EDI Rail Pty Ltd has been contracted by the Queensland Government to manufacture the new electric multiple units (EMUs). These units will be deployed across the Southeast Queensland rail network, including Brisbane’s new Cross River Rail line.
