Sydney Metro City & Southwest Connects with Metro North West Line

Construction work to connect the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line with the existing Metro North West line is now complete, paving the way for testing to start on the new route later this year.

The Northern Connection was constructed over two years. Work included the installation of tracks and operational services in the 15.5 kilometre twin tunnels between Chatswood and Sydenham.

Two become one: final connection made between Sydney Metro lines

The final link to connect the two metro lines involved four sections of rail and almost a kilometre of copper overhead wires between Chatswood Station and the new Sydney Metro City & Southwest tunnels.

This connection will allow Sydney’s metro services to travel under Sydney Harbour and through the central business district.

Passengers will be able to travel from Tallawong into the city in under 50 minutes, as well as from Castle Hill to Barangaroo in 33 minutes and Chatswood to Martin Place in 11 minutes.

A comprehensive testing and commissioning programme will commence later this year, ahead of passenger services starting in 2024.
