Škoda to Supply Traction Motors for Melbourne’s New Tram Fleet

Škoda Group has announced that it will supply up to 1,120 traction motors for a new fleet of trams being produced for Melbourne, Australia.

Initially, Škoda will supply 400 traction motors to power 100 trams, with a further 720 motors under option. In total, this contract is valued at more than 13 million USD.

The new trams will be delivered by Alstom between 2024 and 2028 under the Southern Hemisphere’s largest tram contract to date.

This contract will mark Škoda’s first ever delivery of traction motors to Australia.

Petr Novotný, President of Components & Bus Mobility at Škoda Group said:

The new traction motors will be based on the ŠKODA FCX range and will have an output of 105kW and a weight of 360kg. They will drive the tram axle via a two-speed gearbox.
