Construction Shortlist for HS2 Curzon Street Revealed

HS2 Ltd has published the construction firms that are shortlisted to build Birmingham Curzon Street station.

The construction contract is worth 570m GBP. HS2 Ltd will invite the following companies to tender for the project:

  • BAM Ferrovial (a joint venture consisting of BAM Nuttall Ltd and Ferrovial Construction (UK) Limited)
  • Laing O’Rourke Construction Limited
  • Mace Dragados (a joint venture consisting of Mace Limited and Dragados S.A. UK Branch)

HS2’s Birmingham Curzon Street station has been the first on the high-speed line to obtain planning approval. Once open, it will be a net-zero carbon building, incorporating green designs and sustainable technologies, such as rainwater harvesting and sustainable power generation with more than 2,800 square metres of solar panels fitted on the platform canopies.

The station design is such that it meet a ‘BREEAM excellent’ environmental standard.

David Poole, Procurement and Commercial Director, HS2 Ltd, said:

“Birmingham Curzon Street is absolutely at the heart of the HS2 project and will help transform the city and the economy of the wider region. We are looking for a partner to take on the highly complex construction phase, working with us to deliver this logistical and engineering challenge.

“It’s great to see how much interest there is in the competition and we look forward to working with the successful bidder to deliver, what will be a new low-carbon architectural landmark for Birmingham and the UK.”

To create the Curzon Street design, HS2 partnered with WSP and Grimshaw Architects LLP. The design is inspired by the arched station roofs built by the Victorians, but with a 21st century twist. The station will therefore be accessible and open with plenty of surrounding landscaping.

So far, the site has seen a large-scale archaeological dig with 70 archaeologists working on the project. They uncovered the world’s oldest railway roundhouse. Demolitions and ground investigations are currently preparing the site for construction. Utility diversions will also begin shortly.

The Two Stage Design and Build contract winner will work closely with HS2 Ltd on the detailed design and construction of the station. HS2 Ltd estimates it will be able to award the contract next year.
