CAF to Deliver 20 M4000 Metro Trains to Oslo

CAF has been awarded a new contract from Sporveien to deliver 20 M4000 metro trains to the city of Oslo in Norway.

Specifically, the contract includes the supply of 20 metro trains and their corresponding spare parts, alongside the option to order up to 90 additional units in the future.

The initial base order for 20 units is valued at 150 million EUR.

The new M4000 units will be based on CAF’s INNEO metro platform. The 3-car two-way units will each have 3 double doors on each side. This design will ensure easy and efficient access to optimise stopping times at the stations.

Oslo’s T-Bane metro network consists of more than 85 kilometres of track across 6 lines. The new trains will be designed to operate in severe weather conditions in the Norwegian capital, including snow and extreme temperatures. For example, the bogies will all be motor bogies to improve grip and traction during operation.

In addition, the vehicles will be equipped with onboard batteries that will enable them to reach the next station in the event of a power cut. These will also power manoeuvres at the operator’s depot if required.

Finally, the vehicles will be prepared to be fully automated for GoA4 autonomous driving in the future.

This investment is part of Sporveien’s strategy to meet the forecasted increase in passenger numbers while providing safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport services.

This is the third contract that the CAF Group has been awarded in recent years from the city of Oslo. It follows two 2022 orders to supply 183 electric articulated buses and 87 trams.
