Scotland: Network Rail Invests £3.4 Million in Glenfinnan Viaduct

Scotland’s Railway has announced that Network Rail is commencing a 3.4 million GBP investment project to repair the 123-year-old Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Together with the principal contractor, AmcoGiffen, Network Rail engineers are assessing the condition and strength of the viaduct.

In addition, they are completing work to protect it from water erosion, carry out concrete repairs, and make improvements beneath the track to keep the stone ballast in place.

This project is part of Network Rail’s ongoing maintenance programme to futureproof the landmark. The work is expected to take just under a year to complete.

During the undertaking, rail services will not be disrupted. In addition, no change will be made to the appearance of the structure once the work is complete.

Laura Craig, scheme project manager, Network Rail, said:

“The viaduct is an iconic landmark which attracts visitors from across the world, so we’ve worked hard to develop a solution which will help preserve the structure, respect its historic significance while minimising the visual impact of our work.”

Glenfinnan Viaduct is situated 100 feet above the River Finnan on the West Highland Line, 17 miles from Fort William. Spanning 1000 feet, it is the longest viaduct in Scotland and is known for its appearance in the Harry Potter films
