Alstom to Supply Metropolis Trains for Santo Domingo Metro Extension

The Transport Reordering Office (OPRET) has contracted Alstom to supply new trains for the extension of Line 2 on the Santo Domingo Metro in the Dominican Republic.

Under this order, Alstom will manufacture, supply and put into service eight new Metropolis 3-car trains to operate on Line 2C of the Santo Domingo Metro.

Line 2C will stretch 7.3 kilometres, with 900 meters underground and 6.45 kilometres elevated. It will include five new stations between the existing María Montez station on Luperón Avenue to the new Los Alcarrizos station.

The line’s new trains will be manufactured at the Alstom industrial plant in Santa Perpetua, Barcelona. For added flexibility, they will be able to operate in multiple units with existing trains in the Santo Domingo Metro system.

Iván Moncayo, General Manager of Alstom in the Dominican Republic said:

“Alstom is proud that OPRET has once again relied on our technology and ability to supply trains for this important expansion project of OPRET services in Santo Domingo. When the extension of Line 2C is operational and with the arrival of these new units contracted with Alstom, the Santo Domingo Metro will have a fleet of 72 Alstom Metropolis trains, operating Lines 1 and 2. This will guarantee a modern mass transport, safe and quality for the benefit of the inhabitants of Santo Domingo.”

The Metropolis trains delivered to OPRET will feature wide doors and continuous corridors for an optimal flow of passengers. They will also be equipped with LED lighting in the passenger area and improved passenger information and alert systems.

Meanwhile, the driving desks will have a new design integrated with the other elements of the cab.

This contract is fully financed with credit from the Central American Bank of Economic Integration (BCIE).
