Early construction activities are now underway on Amtrak’s B&P Tunnel Replacement Program, which commenced in March 2023.

This work includes replacing ageing wooden ties with new concrete ties, installing new rail and completing track drainage improvements.

Meanwhile, Amtrak has also released renderings to display how the tunnel will look once the project is complete.

At nearly 150 years old, the B&P Tunnel is Amtrak’s oldest tunnel on the Northeast Corridor, connecting Baltimore to Washington, DC.

By replacing this ageing structure with the future Frederick Douglass Tunnel, Amtrak will be able to operate high-speed trains on all four tracks in the tunnel.

This project is funded by a grant from the FY 2019 Federal-State Partnership for the State of Good Repair Program.
