New York’s Interborough Express Project Moves Forward

Under Governor Kathy Hochul’s direction, New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is set to initiate engineering work for the Interborough Express (IBX).

This new light rail service in Brooklyn and Queens will use the existing freight rail line from Bay Ridge to Jackson Heights. This route will connect ethnically and socioeconomically diverse neighbourhoods in the region.

Once complete, the project could provide connections to up to 17 subway lines and would reduce travel times between Brooklyn and Queens by 30 minutes while serving 40 million riders a year.

Governor Hochul first set out the vision for the Interborough Express in 2022. A planning and environmental linkages study has since been completed, and formal engineering work will now commence.
