Initial Demolition Begins for Amtrak’s Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program

Amtrak has provided an update on the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program, with initial demolition having begun in Baltimore.

This 6 billion USD project will transform a 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor by overcoming the largest bottleneck between Washington, D.C. and New Jersey.

Its centrepiece is a new tunnel to serve electrified Amtrak and MARC commuter trains along two parallel, single-track tunnel tubes.

The start of demolition marks entrance into a new phase for the project, prior to major construction activities beginning later this year.

Amtrak states that this demolition work has been thoughtfully planned and coordinated. However, if unexpected concerns arise, it is encouraging community members to reach out via email at [email protected] or by calling the project team at (443) 423-1115.
