One of the UK’s main rail routes, West Coast, could be put back in public hands after the battle between First Group and Virgin continues.
Directly Operated Railways
Reports suggest that the government is planning public ownership after the threat of being without a contractor from the start of December.
The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport general secretary, Bob Crow, has urged the government to hand the franchise over the Directly Operated Railways to prevent private failure.
Campaign To Renationalise Rail
The RMT have been campaigning for the last 20 years to renationalise UK rail. If West Coast does get handed to DOR, this will mean the UK’s two main routes will be publically owned, with East Coast previously rescued from private failure.
