First of 60 New Stadler IR-DOSTO Trains to Enter Service for SBB

Starting on 17 July, the first of the 60 new inter-regional double-decker IR-DOSTO trains, made by Stadler, will enter service in Switzerland.

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) ordered the 60 additional IR-DOSTO trains from Stadler for around EUR 1.3 billion two years ago. This was an option on an existing contract.

These new trains will strengthen SBB’s fleet with a time-tested vehicle type. These trains will join the existing trains of the type SBB already has in its fleet. The six-car multiple units are 150m long and have 466 seats.

The trains are low-floor to be accessible to all passengers.

Each train also has space for eight bicycles, including charging points for electric bicycles.

Pending approval from the Bundesamt für Verkehr (BAV), the first four trains will begin operating on the route between Zurich and Schaffhausen. Once the new timetable comes into effect in December this year, the new trains will also run on the IR35 route between Bern, Zurich and Chur and on the IR36 route between Basel and Zurich Airport. Then, over the coming years, they will be deployed on further routes in the French and German-speaking parts of the country. The final vehicle is to be delivered in late 2026.
