Trenitalia Maintenance Programme a Success

The use of a remote diagnostics system on Trenitalia’s fleet of Alstom Jazz regional trains has substantially improved the reliability of the fleet. The Trenitalia maintenance programme has resulted in a reduction in failures and breakdowns during services. It has reduced maintenance costs and has improved the passenger experience for millions of commuters.

The first results from the use of remote diagnostics shows a significant reduction in cancellations on regional routes which result from technical problems. In the first six months of 2016, only 1% of scheduled routes were cancelled. Just 0.4% were for causes attributable to failures. This is a 50% reduction in the last two years.

The maintenance model delivers real-time diagnostic information from the fleet of Jazz trains. Dashboards assist in the monitoring of the overall performance of the fleet, as well of individual trains when they are in service. It delivers real-time reports on the status of on-board equipment, as well as reporting on the possibility of any failures or breakdowns occurring.

The system is being trialled by Trenitalia on E464 locomotives and all Alstom Jazz trains in the Italian Regions. This is a big step towards the roll-out of a Dynamic Maintenance Management System, moving towards innovative maintenance relying on predictive, on-condition analysis.

The next phase of the trial will see the roll-out of advanced track-side diagnostic systems. These cutting-edge functions work out wear and tear of components, creating predictive algorithms which identify any malfunctions and also plan for future maintenance needs.

Alstom Jazz

The Jazz is the most up-to-date train of Alstom’s Coradia Meridian series. It is an electric multiple unit (EMU) with a top speed of 160km/h. It features a concentrated traction system with two motor bogies. These reduce energy consumption and brake wear. The Jazz is also 95% recyclable, making it an environmentally sustainable train. The trains feature video surveillance, information screens as well as notices in braille and a loudspeaker system. They also have sockets for mobile phones and laptops and feature high levels of passenger comfort.
