SILK, standing for Sustainable, Innovative, Low-Wear Kinetics, is a revolutionary, fully packaged, mobility system aimed at drastically reducing rail and wheel wear, optimizing cost of ownership over the whole life cycle.
Developed in collaboration with the Innovative Light Train Innovative Light Train project consortium, SILK sets new standards in light train technology, enabling more affordable and more inclusive rail operations.
SILK is a breakthrough product, which frees the rail equipment from the traditional bogie system. Combining an advanced Smart Single Axle and electronically controlled independent motorized wheels, SILK adapts to the rail, reducing wear and maintenance, as well as providing with an improved experience overall for all users.
SILK’s name is a reminder of its light touch on the rails, as well as a call for adventure and exploration on the new Silk Roads: the railways.
Key features of the SILK Mobility System include:
- Revolutionary Architecture Mitigating Rail Wear
- SILK offers independent Motor Wheels on Each Axle, enhancing stability and maneuverability, as well as better adapting to the rail. 30% lighter than a traditional bogie, SILK reduces wear and maintenance.
- Efficiency Over the Whole Life Cycle
- SILK revolutionizes maintenance, reducing both downtime and capital expenditure. Bolted wheels eliminate the need for extensive downtime and specialized equipment, resulting in substantial savings over the product life cycle. Integrated sensors for preventive maintenance continuously monitor system health, preventing potential issues and enabling precise fleet management.
- Enhanced Passenger Experience
- The SILK Mobility System is more stable than any other platform. It includes smart axle sensors and provides train leveling up to 200 mm, ensuring precise alignment with platforms for easy boarding for all.
- High Performance
- SILK supports speeds up to 120 km/h, with 15-ton axle load capacity. It is fully electric, with improved traction performance as well as braking energy regeneration, enhancing both grip and efficiency and making it a worthy, more energy-friendly replacement for current-gen diesel or electric trains.
