Inspiro Metro for Sofia Leaves Factory in Poland

The 21st Inspiro metro vehicle has left Nowy Sacz in Poland for Sofia, Bulgaria.

Metropolitan EAD ordered the vehicles from the SIMETRO consortium, made up of Siemens Mobility GmbH Austria, Siemens Mobility EOOD in Sofia and Newag S.A.

This metro vehicle that is now on its way to Bulgaria is the first from the options element of the contract, rather than the core order. The initial agreement was signed in September 2015, when Metropolitan EAD ordered 20 three-car Inspiro metro vehicles. Then, in January 2019 a further ten vehicles were ordered under an initial option.

Inspiro metro trains are very energy efficient and have low operating costs. The Inspiro metro vehicles for Sofia are fitted with current collectors on the roof, which means they can be used with a different power system.

The transport of the metro vehicles is done at night in a special convoy with pilot cars ensuring the maximum level of safety on the road. Because of the size of the vehicle, it has been divided into sections and is being transported on three lorries. The total travel distance to the destination is more than 1,100km. The route will go through Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and then Bulgaria.

Thanks to this option, the estimated value of the contract with Metropolitan EAD for Newag is around 110 million BGN (56 million euros).
