7 New 4-Car Impuls 2 Trains for Poland

The Marshal and Deputy Marshal of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship have signed an agreement with Newag S.A. for 7 new four-car Impuls 2 trains.

As part of the contract Newag will also provide comprehensive servicing and maintenance as well as repair works for a five-year period. Two operators will benefit from the new rolling stock: Koleje Małopolskie Sp. z.o.o. and POLREGIO Sp. z.o.o. The total value of the contract is more than 245 million PLN, which includes an option to purchase two additional units as well as spare parts. The purchase is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

Newag will also provide a software licence and technical documentation and it will provide training to the operator staff. The first two trains will be delivered within 16 months from the date of the contract, with the last train being handed over within 22 months.

The Impuls 2 electric multiple unit features a driver’s cab that is very ergonomic in its design. For example, the console around the seat allows drivers to keep a clear view of objects close to the front of the train.

The trains will include features to make them more accessible to all passengers, including those with reduced mobility and those travelling with luggage. They will have ramps and automatic lifts to help passengers who need it board and alight from the train. These will also help passengers with bicycles.

The Lesser Poland Province currently has 29 EMUs for intercity connections. The 100th Impuls, which was manufactured in 2017, went to Koleje Małopolskie. Newag believes the same operator will receive its 200th unit, too. The vehicles themselves are being manufactured in the receiving voivodeship. The new trains will enter service in 2022.
