Train operator Vy Tåg AB, which runs four franchises in Sweden, has awarded Bombardier a four-year maintenance contract for its night trains.
Vy Tåg AB, which is owned by Norwegian company Vygruppen, has awarded a four-year maintenance contract to Bombardier Transportation for its night train fleet. The contract also includes an option for an additional two years.
“Vy Tåg looks forward to working with Bombardier Transportation to raise the quality and experience of the Night Train service for Upper Norrland and its vehicles in the coming period. With the new vehicle maintenance agreement, Vy Tåg is taking a big step towards the incentive model that we believe in, and putting strong focus on collaboration to achieve our high goals for our service to our passengers on the Stockholm-Luleå-Narvik route.”
The contract runtime is from December 2020 to December 2024. Bombardier will provide regular maintenance of a fleet of 12 locomotives and 75 passenger coaches. It will also perform occasional heavy-duty maintenance such as bogie overhaul. The electric locomotives were originally manufactured by ASEA between 1967 and 1988
The maintenance works will take place in the Notviken depot in Luleå, in northern Sweden. Bombardier is currently maintaining these trains for operator SJ (Swedish State Railways). Vy Tåg is taking over these operations from SJ in December.
“We are delighted to be chosen by Vy Tåg to support its new Night Train venture with fleet maintenance. Bombardier’s team in Luleå is already doing tremendous work to keep these trains in top condition and it is rewarding to see the quality of our team’s work acknowledged with this new contract in the strategic services business segment. We will uphold our high level of service excellence when Vy Tåg takes over the Night Train operations later this year.”
The Night Train service currently run by SJ and soon to be run by Vy Tåg offers services between Sweden’s major cities such as Östersund, Luleå and Stockholm. The service is seeing an increase in demand as passengers switch from cars and planes to environmentally friendly rail travel.
