Thales has been awarded a contract to supply its ETCS Level 2 signalling technology to the suburban rail line between Mexico City and Toluca. The contract was awarded to Thales as part of a consortium of Spanish companies and their Mexican subsidiaries.

Thales will deploy its state-of-the-art ETCS Level 2 signalling technology and telecommunications systems including GSM-R. This is the first implementation of the ETCS Level 2 signalling solution in the Latin America. In 2008, Thales deployed also the first ETCS Level 1 system on Mexico City’s Buenavista-Cuautitlán line.

Thales is one of the principal suppliers of rail signalling technology and the world leader in ETCS solutions, with a 30% share of the global market. This latest contract in Mexico follows recent awards for ETCS and telecommunications solutions in Nigeria, Greece, Poland, Spain and Hungary, and confirms the continuing success of the company’s international expansion strategy.
