Vienna/Luxembourg, March 30, 2016 – The Austrian railway telecommunications expert Kapsch CarrierCom has been awarded the contract to implement a countrywide railway communication network based on GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) for the Luxembourgian railway network. The contract includes the operation and service support for the first three years. The project will be realized in the beginning of 2017 and will cover 271 track kilometers in Luxembourg.
Following a Europe-wide tender, the Luxembourgian railway operator CFL selected Kapsch as the system supplier, integrator and network operator for the installation of the GSM-R radio network. “As the global leading Railway Dedicated Network supplier, Kapsch is providing communication for close to 80,000 kilometers of railway tracks across Europe, Africa and Asia. A complete end-to-end-solution using the latest technology
Kapsch CarrierCom’s future-oriented Railway Dedicated Network (RDN) solutions support the entire range of railway voice and data communication requirements. In Luxembourg, Kapsch will be setting up an end-to-end railway telecommunication network based on the GSM-R standard. The contract covers the installation of a modern IP-based Release 4 core network and a future-proof access network. The access network features the latest RDN.base station, which is ERTMS grade and IP-capable. Furthermore, the delivery and integration of other sub-systems, such as a new dispatcher network with integration on the existing system and the fiber based transmissions system, will be provided by Kapsch.
As national railway operator CFL is responsible for the rail traffic management on the Luxembourgian network, ensuring safety, performance quality and customer service for a total of 621 track kilometers. The company is also responsible for the railway infrastructure, its maintenance, extension, and technical renewal – such as the GSM-R transmission network, which is part of a development strategy for the national network crossed by important pan-European railway corridors.
