Jewers Doors Secures the Elizabeth Line at Bond Street

Jewers Doors secures the Elizabeth line station at Bond Street

In 2016, Jewers Doors was invited to tender for the entrance gate package on London’s prestigious new Bond Street Elizabeth line station as part of Crossrail’s ambitious Elizabeth line project.

The tender package specified all gates in architectural brass and to have a blast and security rating. Gates were located within the stations’ East and West ticket halls.

Jewers were delighted to be awarded the contract to design, manufacture and install two automated bi-folding main entrance gates, each 10 metres wide, twelve pairs of double-hinged side entrance gates and a further gate within the vent shaft façade.

The main entrance gates are each configured in 10 folding leaves and are constructed from bespoke patinated brass extrusions with a hardened stainless-steel core. The construction was ultimately tested to an SR3 security rating. The gate leaves feature brass-clad stainless steel infill sections which provide additional security to the ticketing hall whilst being aesthetically and architecturally pleasing.

These gates are completely flat when closed and the leaves fold neatly into a bespoke enclosure cabinet to either side of the opening, showing no indication of the gates behind them. Operation is electrically operated from a remote location.

The side entrance gates are configured linearly in 12 pairs of double-hinged leaves manufactured to the same specification as the main entrance gates to create a uniform appearance to the external station facade. Each side gate leaves is manually opened in the morning and held open on an electromagnetic lock at high level during the day. At station closing time, all gates are simultaneously released via a single push button before the locks
are manually engaged to fully secure the station entrance.

The specification for the gates was challenging in every aspect, especially in meeting the SR3 security rating whilst complying with the strict architectural lines and beautiful finishes required by the client team.

The design and approval phase of the project was without a doubt the most demanding, with up to five different client departments having to approve each gate’s design at any given time.

Jewers rose to the challenge, and with the help of our supply partners, we provided both ticket halls with architecturally stunning, blast-resistant, and high-security- rated gates.

The opening of Bond Street Elizabeth line station in October 2022 marked the completion of the last new station on the Elizabeth line.
