CRRC has announced that its CR200J EMU has commenced official operation on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway in China.
On its first commercial journey, the electric multiple unit (EMU) travelled from Xining Station to Golmud along the railway’s scenic “Sky Road.”

The CR200J EMU is a power-centralised vehicle that has been designed specifically for the high-altitude and low-temperature environment along the western section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
It uses a 6-axis power locomotive with a total traction power of 7200KW, which is about 30% higher than the regular 4-axis CR locomotive. This power enables the EMU to start smoothly on uphill slopes with a 30% gradient.

The new vehicle is made up of 9 cars, with 1 motor and 8 tractors. It travels at a maximum speed of 160km/h and can carry up to 676 passengers.
