Alstom has won its first rolling stock contract in Romania and will supply its Metropolis trains to line 5 of the capital’s metro.
The contract has a value in excess of 100 million euros. Further options could raise that value to a maximum of 240 million euros. Metrorex SA, the state-owned operator of Bucharest’s metro system, has ordered an initial 13 Metropolis trains with an option for a further 17 trains – i.e. a potential total of 30 Metropolis trains. Each train will be six cars in length and have a seating capacity of 216.
Alstom will deliver the first unit in 2023. It will operate on the first section of the new Line 5, which opened in September 2020 using Bombardier Movia 346 trains from the Line 3. The following 12 trains will then be delivered right after the first train’s homologation.

The metro trains for Bucharest will have stainless steel car body shells measuring 114 metres in length and 3 metres in width. They will have a seated capacity of 216 but a total capacity of 1,200. The final colours and finishes are not yet set. These will be chosen with Metrorex SA during the design stage. The trains will be equipped with CBTC, making them compatible with modern trackside signalling technology.
To ensure efficient passenger flow the trains will have four double doors per car per side and large gangways.
Other cities that operate Alstom’s Metropolis metro trains are Paris, New York, London, Amsterdam, Singapore, Riyadh, Dubai, Sydney and Montreal.
