Škoda Wins €1 Billion Modernisation and Service Deal in Egypt

Egyptian National Railways (ENR) has contracted Škoda to modernise and maintain at least 280 electro-diesel locomotives for Egypt’s rail network.

This project marks the start of Škoda Group’s expansion into Africa and consists of two contracts, with a total value of over 1 billion EUR.

The first contract covers the overhaul of locomotives over a period of nine years, while the second includes full-service maintenance for up to 15 years.

The scope of these contracts includes a major review and renewal of each locomotive’s components.

The locomotives’ drives and pneumatic parts will be overhauled, their braking systems and electrical wiring will be modernised and the driver’s cabs will be transformed, along with the installation of new control panels.

In addition, the Train Control & Management System (TCMS) will be checked and modified, and the locomotives will undergo a major design makeover.

Didier Pfleger, CEO of Škoda Group said:

“These contracts mark a historic milestone for Škoda Group. With our strong record of accomplishment in servicing and modernisation, we are uniquely positioned to deliver superior locomotive rehabilitation and overhaul services. Our aim is to use our skills and experience to build lasting relationships and make a long-term contribution to improving the quality of the rail sector in the Middle East and Africa.”

To commence the project, two prototype locomotives will be modernised at Škoda’s site in Šumperk, Czech Republic. The remaining locomotives will then be modernised, overhauled and maintained in Egypt to support local jobs.

To ensure successful execution, the group will also provide extensive training during work on the prototypes. This will provide the Egyptian staff with the necessary expertise to overhaul locomotives to European standards in Egypt and in the Czech Republic.

Marek Herbst, Senior Vice President Service at Škoda Group said:

“We are excited to bring enhanced reliability, availability and safety to the Egyptian national railways and passengers. Over the next nine years, we will deliver at least 280 rehabilitated and overhauled locomotives to Egypt with an extended service life of another 15 to 20 years. We will perform up to 15 years of full-service for these locomotives. We are convinced that full-service is the most efficient way for our customers to receive quality care and maintenance for their entire fleet of vehicles.”
