Radio equipment, also known as analogue radio or two-way radio, is used for voice communication between train drivers, dispatchers, and other railway personnel. It typically operates on specific radio frequencies and can cover a limited range. GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications - Railway) is a digital communication system specifically designed for railways. It uses a combination of wireless and wired infrastructure to provide voice and data communication between train drivers, dispatchers, and other railway staff. GSM-R is standardised by the International Union of Railways (UIC) and operates in the 900 MHz frequency band. FRMCS is the next-generation communication system for railways and is designed to replace GSM-R. It is based on 5G technology and will provide faster data transfer, improved reliability, and increased capacity. FRMCS will also support new services such as video streaming and advanced driver assistance systems. Rolling stock equipment typically includes radio or GSM-R transceivers, antennas, power supplies and other components required for communication. FRMCS equipment is still in development, and it will likely take some time before it becomes widely available on rolling stock.
