Mechan: Traversing the UK
Sheffield-based Mechan is one of the only firms in the country with the ability to design and build bespoke traversers.
Four intrepid colleagues from Sheffield-based rail depot equipment specialist, Mechan, are beginning preparations for a charity fundraiser of epic proportions next year.
The quartet has signed up for the Three Peaks Challenge by Rail in June, which will see them scale Britain’s three highest mountains in as many days.
Mechan’s Three Peaks team comprises engineering director, Martin Berry, site and service manager, Dean Fisher, design engineer, Phil Eddison and service engineer, Jonathan Smith. They have committed to raising a minimum of £3,500 in sponsorship and colleagues will be hosting various events throughout the year to help them reach their target.
The event will benefit Mechan’s chosen charity for 2020 and organisers of the challenge, Railway Children. It begins on June 18 at Crewe Station, from where a train will take fundraisers to Bangor for a night climb up Snowden. Another train journey, followed by a two-hour walk, will see them reach the bottom of Scafell Pike in the Lake District before they get ready to climb. They then head north for the final ascent up Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands.
“This challenge will be a test of physical and mental strength, as we fight fatigue and lack of sleep to complete each climb in the allotted time and get back to the respective stations for our next train. Teamwork and preparation will be essential to our success, along with the support and encouragement of our family, friends, and colleagues, who will be helping us raise much-needed funds for Railway Children.”
