Hitachi Rail will present its latest-generation ETR1000 high-speed train alongside a new battery-electric multiple unit (BEMU) at InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin later this month.
The company will display four cars from Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa ETR1000 in the outdoor exhibition area. The vehicles will include executive and business-class accommodation, a bistro coach and a VIP demonstration car.
ETR1000 High-Speed Train
The ETR1000 is designed for operation across multiple European rail networks, with compatibility with different power supply and signalling systems. The train can operate in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
More than 60 ETR1000 trains are currently operating with Trenitalia. The trains are also used on international services, including routes connecting Paris and Milan.
The latest-generation ETR1000 can also be supported by Hitachi Rail’s HMAX digital asset management platform. The system processes operational data in real time and is designed to support traffic management, maintenance and energy management.
The train is designed and manufactured in Italy at Hitachi Rail facilities in Naples and Pistoia.
Battery Train
Hitachi Rail will also use InnoTrans to present its new BEMU battery train, aimed at passenger services on routes without continuous electrification.
The train has a battery range of up to 100 kilometres and can recharge using a double pantograph. Regenerative braking is used to recover energy during operation.
According to Hitachi Rail, the BEMU could reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 70% compared with existing diesel trains. Its batteries are installed beneath the train, while a new HVAC system is designed to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.
The train is intended for regional and urban routes where full electrification is not available, allowing operators to extend electric services without electrifying an entire route.
Hitachi Rail notes that more than 85,000km of European railway remains unelectrified, providing a potential market for battery-powered rolling stock.
The BEMU will be presented at Hall 4.2, Booth 430, while the ETR1000 will be displayed outdoors at Track T1/40 during InnoTrans, which takes place at Messe Berlin from 22 to 25 September 2026.
