Hitachi Rail, in partnership with PT Softorb Technology Indonesia, has been awarded a contract to modernise the automatic fare collection system across the 13 stations of Jakarta MRT’s Phase 1.
The contract, awarded by PT Mass Rapid Transit Jakarta (Perseroda) (MRT Jakarta), covers the development and performance improvement of the network’s automatic fare collection (AFC) system.

Under the project, more than 200 devices will be replaced. The upgraded equipment will support multiple ticket and payment types through single-target readers installed at AFC gates and will be integrated with a new account-based ticketing system.
The modernised system will support payment options including EMV contactless bank cards, QR-based e-wallets, prepaid bank cards, paper tickets and mobile QR tickets.
Hitachi Rail said the work is intended to improve fare processing and interoperability across Jakarta’s wider transport network. The company added that implementation will be carried out without disrupting daily MRT operations.
Gabriel Koe, Head of Taiwan, Indonesia and Philippines at Hitachi Rail said:This contract strengthens our collaboration with MRT Jakarta and underscores our shared commitment to a seamless, integrated fare collection system. By improving performance and expanding payment options, we are supporting a more efficient, passenger‑focused transit experience for Jakarta’s growing commuter base.
The project forms part of MRT Jakarta’s efforts to develop an integrated fare collection system for its existing metro network, with the upgraded infrastructure designed to support additional payment methods and account-based ticketing.
