Mechan Adds York to Traverser Tally
Sheffield-based Mechan has delivered a 130-tonne bespoke traverser and set of 12 lifting jacks to the Network Rail facility.
Sheffield-based Mechan has “a strong purpose and mission to be the best in the industry in which it operates” according to independent assessment by Investors in People (IiP).
The rail depot equipment specialist has retained the international people management standard for a second term, earning praise for its commitment to learning and development.
Apprenticeships in both factory and office roles were acknowledged by the IiP assessor as a key element of Mechan’s succession planning. This year, it has added three school leavers to its workforce, trainee administrator, Sophie Jackson, plus Joshua Price and Billy Hughes, who join existing factory and assembly apprentice, Robert Hoyland, in learning to build and maintain the firm’s wide range of products.
Investment in young talent also extends to the design team, which has recently welcomed University of Sheffield graduate, Matthew Good. As part of his Masters degree in mechanical engineering, Matthew spent a year in industry with a Barnsley manufacturer of train weighing systems and is now working with Mechan’s clients to design bespoke lifting equipment.
Richard Carr, Mechan’s chief executive, said: “We are very pleased to receive such a glowing report from Investors in People and to be demonstrating best practise across the framework. Our new recruits’ enthusiasm, willingness to learn and dedication to the firm has enabled them to integrate seamlessly into the team and clearly impressed our assessor.”
The IiP summary concluded Mechan’s open and friendly work environment encourages people to contribute ideas and take responsibility within their roles. Its knowledge sharing with partners was also recognised, as were the high standards of work that are reflected in its brand and reputation.
