Safety Upgrades on Victoria Level Crossings

The Burke Road Level Crossing removal project, which aims to remove 50 of the busiest and most dangerous level crossings in the Australian state of Victoria over the next eight years, is well underway with the assistance of Alstom’s SmartLock 400 interlocking signalling system. The Burke Road level crossing has caused significant disruption in Melbourne, with boom gates down for 40 minutes during the morning rush hour and posing a risk to commuters and pedestrians.

Alstom oversaw the removal of the level crossings and the installation of the SmartLock 400 system, the third such installation in Victoria. Alstom’s Melbourne-based team adapted the system to the specifications of Burke Road, while keeping it adaptable enough to allow for an expansion of the system at a later date from a centralised location.
