With a lot of new – and as yet unknown – red tape looming as the end of the transition period approaches, Eurotunnel has invested 47 million GBP in establishing a ‘Eurotunnel Border Pass’ to help mitigate the impact of Brexit at its terminals.
The service is aimed at freight customers. With border controls on goods coming into effect on 1 January 2021, Eurotunnel is hoping to facilitate the crossing procedure for customers by collecting the information needed and passing it on to the UK and French authorities.
With the Border Pass truck drivers won’t have to leave their cab or present any documents on arrival at the terminal. It works as a virtual wallet in which freight customers can enter all the relevant information for transporting goods into and out of the UK after Brexit: customs declarations for goods and sanitary and phytosanitary certificates as well as vehicle details (registration number).
Upon arrival at the terminal, truck drivers will have to enter a ‘pit-stop’, where the registration number will be recorded. This will allow terminal staff to ascertain that all the now necessary documents are in place for the truck.
There are currently 5,000 trucks that travel via the Le Shuttle Freight service every day.
