Bombardier Reveals New Test Centre in Germany

Bombardier has unveiled a new test centre at its site in Bautzen, Germany. It houses cutting-edge production and testing technologies and will become Bombardier’s “serial production centre of competence”.

Bombardier Transportation unveiled a new test centre in the presence of Saxony’s Minister President, Michael Kretschmer, Stéphane Dion, the Canadian Ambassador to Germany, Dr Michael Güntner, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), Alexander Ahrens, Mayor of Bautzen, and Marko Schiemann, Saxony State Parliament Representative.

Bombardier Test Centre – Hall
Bombardier Test Centre – Main Hall

Bombardier has put over 16 million euros into this new test centre. It says most of the construction works contracts went to local companies in Saxony.

Michael Fohrer, Chairman of the German Management Board of Bombardier Transportation, said:

“With the digital final assembly hall opened last year and the test centre presented today, our site here in Bautzen is now equipped for the future with the latest modern innovative production and testing technologies. The site has a solid workload and is taking on a pioneering role at Bombardier Transportation as a competence centre for the serial production of regional and long-distance trains as well as trams and metros.”

New Test Centre

The new test centre can accommodate three different vehicle types of up to 120m long at the same time. A new feature is that Bombardier is now testing individual cars prior to assembling them into a train. After that they will undergo in-depth testing. This method allows for faster testing as well as more flexible testing. This in turn enables a capacity increase of 600 cars annually. Digital technology also plays a key role. All the data are digitally linked, which optimises production, testing and all other processes, such as logistics and quality management.

Bombardier says that around 3,500 cubic metres of concrete and 650 tons of steel went into building the new 6,500 square metre test centre. Construction workers also installed 50km of electrical wiring and 900 lamps. One of the features of the test centre is a waterproof testing system, which automatically adapts to the shape of the carbody. There are also a corner load measurement with a combined four-axle wheel load scale, a track for test runs and a separate customer acceptance hall.
