TÜV SÜD and IEEE Unveil SustainMobility Initiative at UN Summit

Global initiative to generate systemic change in the mobility sector.

The transportation sector generates up to 20 per cent of carbon emissions worldwide, making it one of the key players in achieving global climate protection goals. To spearhead concerted action across the world, TÜV SÜD has teamed with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to launch the SustainMobility initiative. The initiative focuses on developing a holistic impact assessment framework for sustainable mobility systems, which will support attainment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the area of climate change. The framework is designed to foster systemic change in the mobility sector and to improve planning capability by introducing standardisation and comparability to the relevant initiatives. Representatives of TÜV SÜD and IEEE and their partners will present the initiative at the UN summit “Driving Sustainable Mobility: Collaborative Impact Assessment Framework for Sustainable Transportation Systems in Alignment with UN SDGs.” The science summit, held in New York City from 10 to 27 September 2024, can be attended online.

The automotive ecosystem is rapidly shifting from a focus on individual vehicles to a broader emphasis on connected mobility solutions. Automated driving, new drive technologies, cybersecurity and software-based vehicles are all areas of focus in this new field.
The rapid pace of advancement in vehicle technology represents enormous potential for reaching global climate protection goals.

Pascal Mast, Director New Technologies and Sustainable Services at TÜV SÜD’s Mobility Division, says:

Mast is one of the speakers during the UN Science Summit, at a session on 16 September that will be moderated and hosted by TÜV SÜD.

Global, Comprehensive, Standardised

The initiators – including international research institutions and, primarily, representatives from the global south – believe that adopting a global and intermodal perspective is a major step in the right direction. To address the SDGs to the fullest extent, however, the mobile ecosystem must be considered in its entirety, including examination of ownership models such as sharing, energy efficiency or drive technologies and social aspects.

The specific goals of TÜV SÜD and its partners in this initiative include creating certified testing environments for mobile pilot projects that will allow for the evaluation and prediction of the impacts of sustainable mobility systems.

Professor Joachim Taiber, Managing Director International Alliance for Mobility Testing & Standardization (IAMTS), points out:

“Seamless integration of systems like these into our existing transport sectors is essential. We will not be able to reach the goals if everyone takes a different approach. What we need is a globally standardised procedure that will make the most of synergies.”

Independent, Recognised, Global

TÜV SÜD and IEEE are guarantors of impartiality and enjoy international trust from OEMs, official authorities, the spheres of science and politics and the general public. These are excellent foundations for implementing the goals of SustainMobility at global level.

Mast affirms:

Attending the session on 16 September 2024 (held at 7 pm, New York time), will provide access to discussions on the roles of various stakeholders in the transition to sustainable mobility and how they can collaborate effectively. The goal is to develop industry-wide strategies for reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation sector, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Expert insights, case studies, and interactive discussions will be featured, with a focus on fostering collaboration among key players in the industry.
