Setting New Standards in Demagnetisation Technology
Maurer Magnetic is a Swiss technology company with over 100 years of expertise in magnetism. In the early 2000s, Maurer Magnetic developed and introduced its patented Maurer Degaussing® demagnetisation technology, which has since set global benchmarks for the demagnetisation ferromagnetic materials. Additionally, to a broad portfolio of machines, Maurer Magnetic also provides on-site demagnetisation services.
In the railway sector, magnetism in rails or ferromagnetic components of rail vehicles can disrupt signal transmission and cause operational issues. Maurer Magnetic offers proven solutions for demagnetising railway and infrastructure components. The following three applications have been successfully implemented numerous times by Maurer Magnetic:
Demagnetisation of Rails in Production
To minimise the risk of magnetic interference, railway operators can procure demagnetised rails. Patented Maurer Degaussing® machines are used to demagnetise rails during production. It is crucial to ensure that the demagnetised rails are not remagnetised during handling or transportation. For example, they should not be lifted with magnetic lifters. The entire supply chain must be monitored. Maurer Magnetic offers the Gaussmeter M-Test LL, a handheld device to measure magnetism of Rails or ferromagnetic components of rail vehicles.
Demagnetisation of Installed Rails
Strongly magnetised rails are often only identified after installation when they cause unexpected operational issues. Magnetic fields emitted by such rails can interfere with train control systems, potentially triggering emergency stops after trains pass over the affected sections. Conventional demagnetisation equipment cannot reliably demagnetise already installed rails. Maurer Magnetic provides a solution with the new Maurer PRO-S mobile machine. This compact and portable demagnetiser generates significantly stronger magnetic fields than comparable devices of similar power ratings, for a deeper magnetic penetration. This capability is particularly important when demagnetising installed rails, especially in urban areas where only the running surface or the upper rail head of tram tracks may be accessible.
Demagnetisation of Rolling Stock
Magnetised components of rail vehicles can also disrupt railway operations. For example, magnetised parts of bogies or undercarriages may prevent track magnets from being correctly detected. Maurer Magnetic offers demagnetisation services for trains during maintenance, avoiding the costly and labor-intensive replacement of components. These demagnetisation services are available globally.
