Visitors to InnoTrans 2026 today got a first look at the FLIRT Nordic Express, a train developed specifically for the requirements of Norwegian long-distance rail service.

On display are four carriages: a bistro car, a family and play car, and two passenger cars fitted with standard and reclining seats.

In March 2023, Norske tog AS and Stadler signed a contract for the delivery of 17 FLIRT Nordic Express long-distance trains. The contract also includes an option for up to 34 additional trains.

The new trains will be used on long-distance routes throughout Norway, which can pose harsh weather and environmental challenges.

Øystein Risan, CEO at Norske tog AS, said:

It has to cope with the cold and the snow; it is extremely important. We actually run over the mountains, not through them, and it can be very cold with a lot of snow. We need to be sure that the train can make it all the way across the mountain.

But for the shared vision of Noske tog AS and Stadler to be met, it was more than just developing an efficient train to cope with the challenges of the Norwegian climate.

Dr. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Vice CEO and Head of Marketing at Stadler, said:

We wanted to create something that combines comfort, operational flexibility, and availability in special Nordic conditions.

Designed for both day and night services, the FLIRT Nordic Express offers up to 464 seats and a range of onboard amenities.

Included in this are adjustable seating arrangements, sleeping compartments with either two or four beds, bistro and family areas, and spacious luggage compartments.

The CEO of Norske tog AS hoped that this project would have a lasting impact on the rail industry in Norway for years to come.

Øystein Risan, CEO at Norske tog AS, said:

People will choose the train not despite the journey, but because of it.

The trains reach a top speed of 200 km/h. Depending on the route, they will be equipped with either an all-electric or a bimodal electric-diesel propulsion system, so they can also run on non-electrified sections of the Norwegian network.
