Stadler has officially unveiled its brand-new FLIRT Akku BEMU for Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) during InnoTrans 2026.
Presented by Peter Spuhler, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Stadler, Andreas Matthä, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ÖBB-Holding AG, and Peter Hanke, Austrian Federal Minister for Innovation, Mobility, and Infrastructure; the train is destined for use on ÖBB services in Lower Austria, and will gradually replace diesel multiple units already in operation.
Slated for introduction starting in 2028; the trains operate on a mixture of both electric and battery power, allowing for continued journeys along non-electrified sections of track using stored energy and eliminating the need for traditional diesel propulsion.
The trains are expected to promote sustainability and enable climate-friendly operation without the need to electrify the entire infrastructure, and are equipped with over 160 seats, as well as multipurpose areas for strollers, bicycles and wheelchairs.
Power outlets and USB-C ports are available throughout the trains, whilst barrier-free entry aims to ensure comfortable access. They are capable of travelling at a top speed of 160 km/h, and up to 140 km/h in battery mode.
The units are scheduled to be deployed on the Kamptalbahn and the Erlauftalbahn, as well as select other lines, once they debut in 2028.
