Siemens Mobility has been chosen by Motiva to provide signalling technology for São Paulo’s brand-new Line 4-Yellow extension.

The new line extension, which will see Line 4-Yellow become Latin America’s first fully automated and driverless metro system, will include the integration of a number of rail technologies, including Siemens Mobility’s CBTC (Communications-Based Train Control) technology, and the highest grade of automation (GoA4), among others.

Once completed, the project will add 3.3 km of double-track tunnels, which will connect the current terminus at Estação Vila Sônia-Profª Elisabeth Tenreiro to the new terminus at Taboão da Serra.

The extension is expected to benefit more than 280,000 residents living in the Taboão da Serra region, and will serve around 110,000 passengers daily with an estimated journey time of 26 minutes.

This project reinforces the scalability of Siemens Mobility's solutions and our ability to help cities worldwide transform urban transit with sustainable and efficient innovations.

In total, the project will see the length of the Line 4-Yellow extended to 16.1 km, as well as the addition of two new stations – Estação Chácara do Jockey and Estação Taboão da Serra. It will render Estação Taboão da Serra the first São Paulo Metro station located outside the city limits, and strengthen Line 4’s role as a key connector across São Paulo’s metro network.

For its part, Siemens Mobility will deliver a full signalling portfolio, including its CBTC system Trainguard MT, electronic interlocking, telecommunications, operational supervision, and GoA4. Whilst the interlocking system will be provided from Germany, the CBTC system will be sourced from France, and parts of the advanced telecommunications solutions will come from Italy, with final integration taking place in Brazil.

Additionally, six trains will also be equipped with CBTC technology, ensuring seamless integration into the network.
