S-Bahn Berlin, Siemens Mobility and Stadler Deutschland have been awarded a major tender for the Berlin S-Bahn.
The three consortium partners will combine their efforts to provide 350 four-car, fully walk-through trains for the Berlin S-Bahn system, ensure maintenance over a period of 30 years, and provide operations across the North-South and Stadtbahn sub-networks for 15 years.

Based on existing vehicles currently in use across the Berlin S-Bahn ring network; the trains included in the tender will feature modern driver’s cabs, updated fire protection and cybersecurity measures designed to meet the latest requirements. The trains’ energy-saving traction systems will also see refinement in an effort to set new benchmarks for energy efficiency over their service lives, whilst the vehicles’ distinctive design will remain unchanged.
Each train will make use of an optimised, bright interior concept by Stadler, and offer a newly designed multi-purpose area including a wheelchair space, height-adjustable seat and additional options for companions of passengers with reduced mobility. Air-conditioning will be handled using a halogen-free refrigerant, and every second seat will be equipped with a USB-C charging port.
Maintenance of the new S-Bahn trains over the 30-year contract term will be managed via Railigent X, Siemens Mobility’s central digital platform for both data-driven maintenance and operations. This will allow for the continuous analysis of condition data, enabling predictive and optimised maintenance processes.
Meanwhile, the Railigent Fleet Manager system will monitor vehicle condition in real time, analyse operating data and support the creation of tasks to enable predictive maintenance, allowing potential problems to be detected early on in an effort to increase reliability and sustainably improve fleet availability.
