The contract includes an option for a further 48 units as well as a maintenance and servicing agreement for the Duisburg vehicles for a period of 24 years with an option to extend by an additional 8 years. Siemens Mobility and Düsseldorfer Rheinbahn AG also signed a 24-year spare parts supply contract. In total, this set of contracts is worth almost 400 million euros.

Michael Peter, CEO, Siemens Mobility, said:

“This order has a very special meaning for us, since it marks our return to the market for high-floor light rail vehicles. Our trains will offer more than two million people in Düsseldorf and Duisburg the highest level of passenger comfort. Our services will also guarantee our customers optimal availability and a sustainable increase in value over the vehicles’ entire lifecycle.”

The light rail network in Duisburg and Dusseldorf measures approximately 85km. The vehicles will also serve Neuss, Krefeld and Meerbusch. Delivery will begin in 2025. Each Avenio HF has 51 seats and standing space for 178 passengers. The network has platforms at different heights, therefore the Avenio HF comes with folding steps.

The light rail vehicles will be equipped with air suspension and air-conditioning as well as infotainment systems. Siemens Mobility will also fit them with its Tram Assistant, a digital collision warning system, which will aid the driver with radar and video sensors, issuing an alert in a potentially dangerous situation.
