In total, Siemens Mobility and Network Rail are upgrading 11,700 cab radios to the latest version.

Rob Morris, Managing Director, Rail Infrastructure for Siemens Mobility, said:

Achieving this significant programme milestone is a reflection of the collaborative and constructive partnership between Siemens Mobility, Network Rail and Yunex Traffic, our manufacturing partners in Poole.

Despite the extraordinary challenges that we have all faced over the last two years, the whole project team has worked tirelessly and is now completely focused on delivering the final 1,700 upgrades.

The British-made radios improve how signallers and train staff can communicate with each other.

The new radios feature improved interference resistance and connection to the 3G/4G data network. They also give operators access to several smart applications such as train-borne condition monitoring (TBCM) and connected-driver advisory service (C-DAS), which are intended to improve operational efficiency and the passenger experience.
