The new ÖBB Cityjet double-decker train is currently undergoing testing in one of the world’s largest climate wind tunnels.

The Rail Tec Arsenal in Vienna is conducting extreme weather condition simulations to ensure the train meets safety, reliability, and efficiency standards before its scheduled deployment in 2026.

The climate wind tunnel tests subject the Cityjet double-decker to temperatures ranging from -25°C to +40°C and wind speeds of up to 160 km/h. These evaluations assess the train’s ability to maintain performance and passenger comfort under various weather scenarios.

Functional assessments ensure critical systems such as doors, water supply, and thermal insulation perform effectively. Windows and doors are also tested for freezing conditions to determine defrosting times and energy efficiency.

The newly tested train is set to enter service in the Greater Vienna area as part of the 2026 timetable. ÖBB is investing approximately 1.5 billion EUR in 109 Cityjet double-decker trains to expand capacity in the eastern region. This initiative is part of ÖBB’s broader investment programme, allocating 6.1 billion EUR for 330 new trains by 2030.

The double-decker trains will operate primarily on the north-south axis through Vienna’s main rail corridor. This includes REX services from Znojmo/Retz via the Nordwestbahn and Břeclav/Bernhardsthal via the Nordbahn to the Vienna main line, continuing via the Südbahn to Wiener Neustadt and Payerbach-Reichenau.

Peter Hanke, City Councillor for Business, Tourism and Vienna Public Utilities said:

The ÖBB's mobility services have been making an important contribution to the climate-friendly mobility transition for decades - every day, reliably and across national borders. The service is indispensable, especially for the many commuters who come to Vienna from the surrounding area every day. With the new Cityjet double-decker trains, passengers can now reach their destination even more comfortably.

By integrating these modern double-decker trains, ÖBB aims to enhance passenger experience and support Austria’s long-term transport infrastructure development.
