The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has announced a slew of initiatives set to transform public transit networks throughout Atlanta at its recent State of MARTA event.
As part of plans to modernise its network, the operator has also unveiled a fleet of brand-new, open-gangway CQ400 Railcars, all of which are fitted with upgraded lighting, seating, digital display units, charging stations and improved safety measures.

MARTA General Manager and CEO, Collie Greenwood, was present to unveil the new railcars, stating:When I stepped onto that new train this morning, it felt like stepping into the future.
These new railcars are an inspiration to everyone at MARTA and to our customers who will get to experience a cleaner and safer ride – and hopefully one that shows them how transit can make their lives easier and their trip more enjoyable. The future of transit begins now at MARTA, and the State of MARTA is strong.

Speaking at the event, Greenwood further detailed future plans for the region as it prepares for an estimated population increase from 6 to 8 million by 2050, announcing the introduction of new Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, as well as a fleet of zero-emission vehicles for the MARTA Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines and upgrades to local bus networks & fare payment systems.
Network improvements will also see MARTA invest 1 billion USD in the upgrading of all 38 of its rail stations, with new transit hubs for bus users set to be created in Clayton County, South DeKalb and Stonecrest.
The operator has also announced a redesign of its MARTA app, which will begin to offer real-time train arrival information, alongside the introduction of updated station information screens.
MARTA Board Chair, Jennifer Ide, said:The future is now, and it’s happening at MARTA.
We are breaking ground, launching innovative services, and expanding our system to meet the needs of our growing region. Together, we’re building a brighter, more connected future for metro Atlanta.
